Before they did so, however, Johann, patrolled around the tower to see if he could get a sense about what lurked in the upper levels. The battle raged on. While most of the heroes fought the first animate statue, Warg bravely fought the other in single combat. As Alice rushed across the chapel to aid him, the redoubtable dwarf struck his attacker a blow so powerful it also destroyed the statue. Still, some fell magic held the creature together and it continued to flail at the dwarf.

With the vampire seemingly destroyed and Orithur returned to health the party took a well earned rest, and spent the week visiting Holg’s Locker, wandering about the village and generally reflecting on their experiences. While some of his friends rested Johann found work at Itokonen’s. Sadly, though, the party discovered their friend, Veronwe, was leaving the party. Veronwe had come to Ashlar to observe humankind and to learn more about the short-lived folk of the duchy, but now living among the humans had become too much for him.

The fight raged on. The party clustered about the vampire dryad’s fallen tree, trying to lure her into the reach of their weapons. She in turn, used her charms on Johann, convincing the stout dwarf she was his friend. When Grogor starting hurling silver coins at the creature, Johann surprised his friends by leaping onto the surprised half-orc. When he did so, the vampire moved closer calling out to her new friend to bring the half-orc closer so she could finally feed.

Grogor cautiously moved forward to investigate the other two cell doors. Peering through the doors’ grill he determined one was empty while the other held nothing but a rotting chest piled high full of mildewed gold! The door was locked, but after a few minutes Grogor had defeated the lock and rushed into the cell. Sadly, all was not as it seemed. As the door opened, the rotting chest began to move—the pile of mildewed gold exploding outward to punch the brave rogue full in the chest. The treasure chest punched Grogor so hard, only his savage orcish heritage kept him standing. As Grogor staggered back, the rest of the party leapt into action. Quickly, Thangrimm slammed the cell door shut. This action gave the party a few precious moments to prepare, but the thing in the cell—identified shortly thereafter as a zombified mimic—quickly shattered the door.

10 Trivial Choices to Death

We sadly had the first death in my Adventures in Shadow campaign recently (in 017: Death in the Darkness). Brave Toliyrath—wizard about town and one-time rope merchant—was crushed and burnt to death by a crystal ooze in the sunken tunnels below the ruined village of Greystone. His death was entirely avoidable and pointless.
